Mandy, Jennifer, Jared, Jeff, & Jesse talk about what games we anticipate playing most in 2012. Then we make bold, stupid predictions about what will happen in the next year.

We play a video game trivia contest. Are you smarter than us? Probably.

There's a spot in Half-Life 1 where you come around a corner and have the first encounter with the Marines. The area slopes down into a trough. On the far side there are sandbags and another ramp up into a far room. There are three marines facing you on the far side, and they open fire immediately. Of course, that is distracting. You don't notice there are two other marines who disappear in the room on the far side. You get engaged in a firefight with the remaining three marines. They're tough. You're already low health (oh the days before health regen) when you get to this point, so you're scared. Ducking and covering just praying you don't get shot.

I found myself hiding with two of the far marines down, when I started getting shot. Those two marines that disappeared? Yea, they took back routes to come to two sniper boxes on either side of the room you entered on. It was the first time in my gaming history that I thought, "Damn. Those guys are smart."

Rough sketch of trough set up. You come in on the left.
That spot on the left is a little room you could duck down into. The entrance was in the middle of the ramp.

And that's the charm of Half Life 1

interesting. i went straight to HL2, which i thought had some cool aspects, but i was lost (story-wise), and eventually gave up. i felt that the vehicle sections went too long and the enemies (turkey headed aliens) were basically like zombies.
your description sounds a lot more compelling than what i experienced. maybe i was doing it wrong.
